If you’re a fan of dinosaurs, Jurassic Park, musicals, pop songs, and/or ultra meta humor, then hold onto your butts – there’s a new show in town. The Unauthorized Musical Parody of Jurassic Park (currently playing at Rockwell: Table & Stage in Los Angeles) takes everything you know and love about Steven Spielberg’s sci-fi adventure and turns it on its head. But unlike some parodies, which skewer instead of celebrate, this one clearly comes from a place of love.
Rockwell: Table & Stage has put on other 90s film parodies, including Scream, Hocus Pocus, Cruel Intentions, and Clueless, and the common thread in all of them is a deep understanding of the movies, up to date pop culture references and social commentary, all with a modern jukebox musical vibe. With its spin on Jurassic Park, UMPO questions the efficacy of Richard Hammond’s theme park, pokes fun at everyone’s internet boyfriend (and frequent Rockwell performer) Jeff Goldblum, and brings dinosaurs to life (and/or a theatrical version of CGI) to rewritten songs like “I Will Survive.”
