Richard Melnick Q&A on Westword

| Nov 21, 2012

Lobeline Communications client Richard Melnick, author of “Parents Who Don’t Do Dishes,” talks Breaking Bad and clairvoyance on Westword.

Richard Melnick was diagnosed with cancer a dozen years ago. While fighting a life-threatening illness and facing what could have been a premature death sentence, though, he discovered a new way of viewing the world.

One of the subjects he often pondered while in medical limbo was parenting, which he writes extensively about in his book Parents Who Don’t Do Dishes. And while Melnick certainly covers his fair share of paternal methodologies, a large part of Parents Who Don’t Do Dishes is devoted to examining life’s simplest philosophies, told in memoir form with a healthy balance of pop-culture references and humor as decoration.

In advance of Melnick’s book hitting the shelves at the Tattered Cover this week, Westword caught up with the first-time author to discuss why parents shouldn’t do dishes, living in the moment and other random personal philosophies.

Three-Time DownBeat Award-Winning Musician Galen Performs at L.A.’s Renowned Good Hurt Nightclub, December 7, 2012

| Nov 20, 2012

Los Angeles, CA. – Singer-songwriter-composer and three-time DownBeat Magazine award-winning artist Galen will take the stage with his award winning band Compendium at L.A.’s renowned Good Hurt Nightclub 12249 Venice Boulevard, on Friday, December 7th at 8:00pm (www.galenmusiconline.com).

Known for his wide ranging vocal agility, Galen brings a fresh and exciting approach to today’s independent music scene. With influences ranging from R&B, Pop and Middle-Eastern, to Jazz, Gospel and Rock, Galen’s infectious vibe has quickly attracted fans of every musical persuasion.

While attending Western Michigan University, Galen’s musical prowess stood out. By the time he graduated with a degree in music, Galen had already garnered an unprecedented three awards from DownBeat Magazine’s annual music competition, including Best Jazz Arrangement for his rendition of Stevie Wonder’s “I Believe (When I Fall in Love).”

“It’s a great feeling when people appreciate and respect your work. Such prestigious acknowledgement reinforced my decision to dedicate my life to making great music,” Galen explains.

Soon afterward, Galen was performing all over the country alongside such jazz legends as Kurt Elling, Bobby McFerrin, Chick Corea, Johnny Mathis and Darmon Meader, to name but a few.

However, just as life can deliver you high notes, it can also try to throw you off key.

Diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis a little over a year ago, Galen frequently lends his time and talent towards helping find a cure. He’s performed “The Star-Spangled Banner” at numerous MS fundraisers, and donated portions of his CD sales to the National MS Society.

“Being part of the crusade to find a cure for MS allows me to combine my passion with a purpose on a deeply personal level,” Galen states.

“I want to make people feel the passion that I feel when I play a song that I love. The right song in the right moment can take you away and make you feel something everyday life can’t,” says Galen about his music.

His upcoming show at the Good Hurt Nightclub is certain to do just that!
