NERDIST: THE UNAUTHORIZED MUSICAL PARODY OF JURASSIC PARK Is Very Clever, Girl

Rachel Heine | March 12, 2018

If you’re a fan of dinosaurs, Jurassic Park, musicals, pop songs, and/or ultra meta humor, then hold onto your butts – there’s a new show in town. The Unauthorized Musical Parody of Jurassic Park (currently playing at Rockwell: Table & Stage in Los Angeles) takes everything you know and love about Steven Spielberg’s sci-fi adventure and turns it on its head. But unlike some parodies, which skewer instead of celebrate, this one clearly comes from a place of love.

Rockwell: Table & Stage has put on other 90s film parodies, including Scream, Hocus Pocus, Cruel Intentions, and Clueless, and the common thread in all of them is a deep understanding of the movies, up to date pop culture references and social commentary, all with a modern jukebox musical vibe. With its spin on Jurassic Park, UMPO questions the efficacy of Richard Hammond’s theme park, pokes fun at everyone’s internet boyfriend (and frequent Rockwell performer) Jeff Goldblum, and brings dinosaurs to life (and/or a theatrical version of CGI) to rewritten songs like “I Will Survive.”

POPCORN TALK NETWORK: Review of the UMPO Jurassic Park at Rockwell LA

Popcorn Talk Network Staff | March 5, 2018

Triceratops and T-Rex and Velociraptors—oh my! Rockwell Table and Stage has invited the dinosaurs into their theatre, and they’ve spared no expense. But don’t fear, the only thing in danger of getting hurt is your stomach from laughing so hard.

Jurassic Park is the latest story to get the unauthorized musical parody treatment, and it’s the same high caliber as its predecessors. The entire cast is phenomenal in terms of both comedic and vocal talent. Michael Thomas Grant and Dedrick Bonner are standouts, doing uncanny impressions of Jeff Goldblum and Samuel L. Jackson, respectively. Lesley McKinnell’s extra- ditzy, ultra-flirty Ellie is a riot, and the fact Molly Stilliens manages to make belting while maneuvering a giant dinosaur head look effortless is truly impressive.
