broadwayworld.com – BWW Review: Not To Be Missed Never Been Kissed – The Unauthorized Musical At Rockwell

The musical parodies hits just keep coming at Rockwell Table & Stage! Popular (sometimes cult) flicks get infused with pop songs resulting in a new twist on the film, and sometimes on the songs. With NEVER BEEN KISSED – THE UNAUTHORIZED MUSICAL, cleverly written by Jordan Ross Schindler, the vocally-gifted, triple-threat cast perform their most entertaining, live, in-your-face version of Drew Barrymore‘s 1999-starrer Never Been Kissed.

Plot centers around Josie, a budding journalist, who goes undercover at her former high school for an investigative report on non-specific teen life. (Josie hasn’t figured out her angle of her story yet.) Josie’s re-entry into high school life, brings back memories of her own high school experiences – being a nerd, an outcast who’s bullied by the popular cliques.

queerforty.com – Bromance is in the Air in LA’s Cher and Xtina Musical

Sexy ladies of burlesque get some gender bending in “Brolesque” at LA’s Rockwell Table & Stage.

The bro-ed up musical parody, which starts Jan. 31, tips its hat to the Cher and Christina Aguilera musical and puts on a tribute show with all men.

In talking to its leads Garrett Clayton (TV’s “Hairspray”) and KCdilla (from the ever so popular “Dragula”), they never used the word drag but instead opted for gender bending.

stagescenela.com – Never Been Kissed: The Unauthorized Musical

Lana McKissack takes over for Drew Barrymore as frumpy 25-year-old L.A. Times copy editor Josie Geller (2000 miles west of the 1999 movie smash’s Chicago Sun-Times), who might just accomplish her dream of becoming an honest-to-goodness reporter if she can ace the assignment she’s as long last been given by editor-in-chief Rigfort (Matt Shively), i.e., to go undercover as a 17-year-old high school student and write a tell-all expose about teen life today.

Trouble is, Josie’s high school years were hell, and her return to campus life looks to be no more heavenly than the first time round, at least not with co-worker Anita (Amanda Shechtman) serving as her ill-advised fashion guru.

latimes.com – Unauthorized ‘Never Been Kissed’ Musical Parody Is Peak ’90s Nostalgia

Josie is 25 years old and nervous about her first day of high school. At least she’s finalized her outfit: a white, feather-lined lingerie robe that holds the promise of a fresh start free of bad teen memories.

The music comes to a pause. She steps forward and takes a deep breath. “I’m not Josie Grossy anymore!” she shouts, to riotous audience applause.

It’s an iconic moment for fans of “Never Been Kissed,” the 1999 romantic comedy starring Drew Barrymore as a journalist inexperienced with romance. The beloved movie — which included David Arquette, Michael Vartan and Molly Shannon in the cast — is the latest unauthorized musical parody at the Rockwell Table & Stage. The film’s co-writer Abby Kohn and actress Jordan Ladd were among the opening-night crowd last Saturday.
