Poco headed for Colorado Music Hall of Fame

| Nov 27, 2014

Songwriter Richie Furay moved to New York City from his native Ohio in 1964 and joined the city’s folk music scene, but the scene’s best days were in the past, and soon he was working for the aircraft company Pratt & Whitney.

Exciting new music was coming out at the time, and fellow songwriter Gram Parsons turned Furay on to one the era’s pop pioneers, The Byrds.

“When Gram gave me The Byrds first record I said, ‘I have to get out of here and get back to music,’” Furay said last week during a phone interview. “I hadn’t heard anything like this. … I don’t know, it struck a chord.”

Furay didn’t just get back into music. As a founding member of the seminal bands Buffalo Springfield and Poco, he helped establish the genre of country rock. That’s why he and Poco are among the latest Colorado Music Hall of Fame inductees.

Colorado Music Hall of Fame to Host Induction Concert in January

| Nov 17, 2014

The Colorado Music Hall of Fame will host an induction concert with performances from original members of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Poco and Firefall, plus a tribute to Stephen Stills/Manassas, on Friday, January 9, 2015, 7 pm at Denver’s Paramount Theater. Tickets for the induction concert, presented by Comfort Dental, go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday, November 21 at Altitude Tickets www.altitudetickets.com

Straddling such diverse styles as rock, folk, country and bluegrass, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band’s move to Colorado from Los Angeles in 1971 contributed to its rise in stature, both commercially and creatively. In 1977, the pioneering Dirt Band became the first American group selected by the Soviet government to tour Russia. In the 1980s, the band made inroads into the contemporary country music world with a slew of Top 10 hits. The band continues to record and tour and all the original members Jeff Hanna, John McEuen, Jimmie Fadden and Bob Carpenter will perform.
